Magaly Rivera hosts a site that provides a lot of information of our Puerto Rico, and we invite you to visit her site and take some time to explore our tropical island.  Within those pages you can find a wide scope of information pertaining to the island, its culture, people, where to find local exotic hideaways, miles of white sandy beaches, mountains and valleys, and many other natural wonders.

Click on the map and to hear the sound of the "coqui", enjoy your visit to Puerto Rico, but come back here!  Click here to see a picture of the coqui.

Isla Verde Beach (I know this may sound touristy, but this is my favorite beach in Puerto Rico.)

El Morro

El Morro was built for defending against sea attackers; later San Cristóbal was built to protect against attackers coming by hand.

Spanish troops built the forts beginning in 1539 with a tower at El Morro and La Fortaleza.  Most of the walls we can see in the forts today were added during the 1760's - 1780's, even though there was constant modification for centuries (El Morro 248 years, San Cristóbal 150 years).

Although El Morro is more famous, it is much smaller than San Cristóbal.  San Cristóbal covers 27 acres of ground (110,000 square meters) and is the largest fortification built by the Spanish in the New World.

El Morro rises over 140 feet above the sea and has walls from 18 to 25 feet thick in places.  San Cristóbal is over 150 feet straight up from the Atlantic shoreline.  The city walls which join the two fortresses and once encircled the entire colonial capital city are 3.4 miles long.  The fortresses and the walls, together with La Fortaleza, are recognized by the United Nations as a World Heritage Site, one of only 12 U.S. National Park units to be so designated.

The historic grounds of El Morro have recently been restored to the way they looked when the fortress was built and used.  The fort is open to visitors every day of the year, except Christmas Day.  If you go allow an extra 5-10 minutes to walk from the parking area at the end of the Norzagaray Street at the Fifth Centennial Plaza.

The Caribbean National Forest, approximately 28,000 acres in size, is located in the rugged Sierra de Luquillo, 40 km southeast of San Juan. It the only tropical forest in the National Forest System. Originally set aside in 1876 by the Spanish Crown, the forest represents one of the oldest reserves in the Western Hemisphere.

The forest is an area of extremes. It is the rainiest National Forest; up to 240 inches per year have been recorded on the higher peaks. More than 100 billion gallons of rainwater fall on the Forest per year.

The result of such heavy rainfall and the warm tropical climate is a dense evergreen forest containing 240 native tree species and masses of vines, epiphytes, giant ferns, and mosses. Twenty-six species are found nowhere else. The true rainforest, commonly called the Tabonuco forest, is found on the lower slopes below 2,000 feet elevation— and is the most spectacular.

The Forest contains rare wildlife including the Puerto Rican Parrot, which is largely green in coloration, about 12 inches long, and displays brilliant blue wings in flight. At close range a vivid red forehead is also visible. It is found only in this part of the island. Approximately 50 other bird species are found on the Forest. Snakes are rare in the Forest. The largest one is the Puerto Rican boa which can attain a length of more than 90 inches. There are no poisonous snakes on the Forest or the island. Many species of lizards, crabs, and frogs, including the unique "coqui" are found in abundance throughout the forest. The Forest is a wildlife refuge; no hunting is allowed.

Hiking is probably the best way to experience the Forest in its many different forms. Numerous trails provide access to the Forest, from the lowest valleys to the highest peaks. Some trails are very rugged and should be attempted only by well prepared and experienced hikers. At the Interpretive Service Center you can get information on which trail would be suited for you.

Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands provide an unusually favorable environment for studies in tropical forestry. The climate is frost-free and ranges in moisture from semi-desert to rainforest conditions within very short distances. More than 300 different soils are at hand, ranging from sand to clay, shallow to deep, and alkaline to acid. Some of the areas that were once cleared for agriculture are returning to forests. These areas are in all stages of reforestation and are close together.  In addition, some of the untouched forest remains for study.  These research areas are accessible and mapped. Despite pressures for these lands to be converted to other uses, areas of natural forest used for study have been protected against human disturbances, some for more than 30 years.
